Children's Books North Network
In support of the new Children’s Books North Network Prize for illustrators (part of the Northern Writers’ Awards) this free and online practical and inspiring workshop, led by acclaimed designer, judge, and picture book specialist Ness Wood, offers a comprehensive introduction to creating picture books for children.
Aimed at emerging illustrators, the session will explore the fundamentals of the 32-page picture book format, with a focus on pacing, the balance of text and image, narrative composition, character design and building imaginative worlds that captivate young readers.
The second half of the session will look at how to prepare your portfolio for submission to publishers and agents. Ness will discuss what the industry looks for in children’s illustration portfolios, including the importance of showcasing a range of formats such as board books, picture books, colour comics, black and white fiction, and cover designs.
Participants will gain insight into curating a selection of 12-15 strong pieces that demonstrate the ability to draw people, animals and characters in child-friendly scenes, as well as work that reflects diverse and inclusive storytelling. The session will also highlight the value of sequential art, originality and a willingness to experiment.
This event has been programmed to mark the launch of the inaugural Children’s Books North Network Prize for aspiring picture book writers and illustrators based in the North of England, in partnership with New Writing North and funded by Arts Council England and Manchester Metropolitan University.
