We would like to extend a huge congratulations to former Manchester Multilingual City Poet, Anjum Malik, who has been awarded an MBE in the King’s Birthday Honour’s List.

Anjum has received the award for services to British South Asian Arts. We are delighted that she is being recognised for her incredible work in amplifying South Asian voices, creating and sharing beautiful stories and celebrating cultural diversity and multilingualism in Manchester and beyond.

On receiving her MBE, Anjum said:

“My first thoughts are of my parents, Imtiaz Tahira Malik and Abdul Latif Malik, who came to the UK from Pakistan and made enormous sacrifices so their children could have opportunities they never had. This honour belongs as much to them as it does to me.”

Anjum is a poet, scriptwriter and Senior Lecturer at Manchester Metropolitan University. She was a Manchester Multilingual City Poet from 2021-2024, during which time she created and translated a vibrant range of poetry, including the poetry films ‘This Here’ and ‘We Are Butterflies Forever in Flight.’
