Open Call: Tartu City of Literature Residency

Tartu UNESCO City of Literature is inviting applications from writers and translators for their Autumn 2026 residency.

The Tartu City of Literature Residency aims to increase international exchange and communication, contribute to the mobility of writers and translators, offer a creative and inspiring environment and provide writers with an opportunity to introduce their work to Estonian readers.

The residency is coordinated by the Estonian Literary Society in cooperation with Tartu Literature House Foundation and in partnership with various other literary institutions.

The residency period runs from 15 October-15 November. Selected residents will stay at the Karl Ristikivi residency apartment. They will receive:

  • A scholarship of 600 euros/month.
  • Compensation of travel costs up to 350 euros.
  • An opportunity to engage with the local cultural scene, perform at different events, including the festival Crazy Tartu.
  • A contact person, responsible for making arrangements.

Criteria:

  • Upper intermediate level of spoken English.
  • At least one published book, screenplay, theatre script, or translation from Estonian intro another language by the applicant.
  • Interest in Estonian culture and literature.
  • Readiness to participate in local literary life.
  • Literary work during the residenct.
