Hinterland is a Manchester based Community Interest Company (CIC), offering an alternative to a night out built around alcohol.

The Northern Quarter has plenty of places to drink and almost nowhere to sit after nine with a pot of tea and something worth talking about. Hinterland started as the answer to that: a bar with no alcohol in it, a kitchen that is entirely plant-based, and a programme of nights built around the kind of conversation most venues are too loud to hold.

It is run as a Community Interest Company, which means any surplus goes back into the programme rather than to shareholders. In practice that shows up as cheap or free events, artists who get paid, and a room that stays open to people who are not spending much.

Hinterland is located in the basement of the Manchester Buddhist Centre (16-20 Turner Street), and is open Wednesday to Sunday.
