Robert Rose (1806-1849), the 19th-century self-titled “Bard of Colour” was a poet central to Victorian Manchester and a key member of the Sun Inn Poets.

A mixed-race writer born to a Guyanese mother and white father who presumably brought him to England, Rose had a storied life that tragically ended with his death in police custody. He is remembered as Manchester’s first Black writer.

Join us on a visit to Chetham’s Library to view Robert Rose’s handwritten manuscripts and printed poems followed by reflective writing time at Manchester Cathedral.
