Jonny Rodgers (supported by Stairwell Books)
In I Hate Chocolate Frederick is forced to move from a posh London independent school to a Northern inner-city comprehensive after his parents get divorced. Here he meets Rashid, whom he grudgingly accepts as a friend.
Frederick’s explosive anger issues lead to a viral moment in class, which sees him named ‘Furious Freddy’ and trending on social media. ‘He’s lonely, he’s not particularly likeable, he’s in a new environment, his parents have split up and he’s carrying so much repressed anger, but ultimately we’re rooting for him,’ says Rodgers, who lives in South Manchester with his Boston terrier, Bunsen, and is a keen hiker and musician when he isn’t writing fiction.
