Translating is a way of reading.

We read the same text, but we each produce different translations according to our understanding and what we feel when we read. We also have our own way of expressing ourselves, our personal creativity and our consideration of the use to which our version will be put. In this workshop we will invite you to reflect on the meaning of the original text, to share your translations and to discuss them.

Second seccion: Soneto XXIX by Garcilaso de la Vega
To translate the sonnet XXIX by Garcilaso de la Vega (1501-1536) into English is an invitation to explore the culture and literature of the Spanish Renaissance, its poetic forms, and themes. The theme of this sonnet is a recreation of the classical myth of Hero and Leandro.

This workshop will be held in two sessions. Participants will receive the text and a working guide in advance. The first session (22 April) will consist of a guided tour of the Manchester Art Gallery to see Frederic Leighton’s The Last Watch of Hero and a presentation of the poem and its context in the cafeteria afterwards.
The second session (28 April), a sharing, and discussion of the participants’ translations, will take place at the Instituto Cervantes.
The workshop will be conducted by Luz Comendador (librarian and translator) and Ana Palacio (teacher at the Instituto Cervantes in Manchester).
