Join Professor Daniel Newman, an author and historian, as he shares his passion for bringing medieval Arab dishes to life in his most recent book ‘The Exile’s Cookbook: Medieval Gastronomic Treasures from al-Andalus and North Africa’.

The period of Arab rule for parts of the Iberian Peninsula was marked by great cultural achievements, including in the culinary arts.

The cuisine reveals the intensity of exchanges with other parts of the Muslim world, as well as the interrelationships between the various communities within this multiconfessional space.

The talk will discuss the recipe collections reflecting gastronomy and foodways, the emergence of a regional cuisine, the links with religion and identity, and the influence on the development of mediaeval European food.

Hosted by: Andrew Nowell, press officer for the Nature Friendly Farming Network and former Manchester journalist.
