Give children the chance to dig, discover and create in this unique cross-curricular workshop combining creative writing and environmental learning.

Led by Forest School researcher Abigail Reid, this engaging session supports children to explore the idea of belonging – to their local environment, their community and the wider natural world. Pupils will take part in a guided poetry activity to develop their voice and imagination, alongside a hands-on planting experience where they will learn about plant propagation, sustainability and recycling.

Designed to support the KS2 English and Science curriculum, the workshop encourages collaboration, reflection and care for the environment, while building confidence in self-expression.

Each child will plant and take home their own seedling—something to nurture, observe and feel proud of.

A memorable, meaningful experience that helps children grow in confidence, creativity and connection to nature. 

Please note that one ticket must be booked per child, and for capacity reasons each child can only be accompanied by one adult.

Meet Abigail Reid

Abigail is a former journalist, a certified primary school teacher, and a Forest School Leader. In 2023, she established Rock Paper Write CIC, which conducts forest school and creative writing workshops for children. For the third consecutive year, she has been commissioned by the Lowry Theatre to provide creative writing workshops at its outreach schools.

Current Research and Focus

Abigail is presently pursuing her PhD at the University of Salford. Her practice-based research investigates the impact of incorporating creative writing activities into a forest school program. The goal is to assess whether this integration can enhance children’s environmental awareness and their connection to the local community. This study will examine how children interact with outdoor environments, express their thoughts and emotions through writing, and how engaging in creative projects can enrich their understanding of environmental issues.
