Melbourne open for Virtual Writers in Residence

To all writers from UNESCO Cities of Literature – Melbourne are inviting you to put yourself forward to be a virtual writer in residence in November this year.

From poets to playwrights, this is an opportunity to get to know Melbourne’s vibrant and varied literary community up close by spending November working with one of the many organisations that make them a City of Literature:

Below is the list of hosts that we have and the simple point of inspiration they are looking for!

  • Amplify Bookstore is looking to welcome a BIPOC writer who is passionate about uplifting and centring our voices and stories in their writing.
  • Australian Tapestry Workshop is looking for a writer who is interested to connect with weavers, artists and lovers of textiles and tapestry to explore their surprising stories”
  • Geelong Regional Library Corporation is looking for a writer who can connect with and inspire those interested in bold writing in order to connect with a younger audience.
  • Melbourne Connect is looking for a writer interested in how innovation and technology are being used to tackle the grand challenges of our time by engaging with the work of other innovators.
  • Melbourne Young Writers Studios is seeking a fantasy or genre writer to share their experiences and advice with our community of writers
  • Rawcus is looking for a writer or poet to explore topics alongside our Ensemble of performers with and without a disability.
  • Royal Historical Society of Victoria would welcome a writer of any stripe to work with our curators to reimagine our collection through a creative lens.
  • Writers Victoria is looking for a writer who is interested in creative ways of engaging with other writers and writing communities.

Each writer in residence will be connected with their selected organisation and will require you to produce agreed upon content for the organisation.

This content will be any three of the following (or three of just one of the following)

  • a workshop
  • a written piece
  • an appearance/panel
  • a social media takeover

The residency will also include opportunities for meetings with all the writers in residence and facilitated further connections with Melbourne as a City of Literature.

As one of our virtual writers in residence you will be paid $2000 (AUD) and you will retain all copyright for your work.

The deadline to apply is midnight Monday 11th September 2023 (AET).
