Manchester Cathedral is a thriving, diverse and welcoming church in the heart of the city. Founded by royal charter in 1421, the Manchester Collegiate Church became a cathedral in 1847, and has been a place of welcome and hospitality for over 1300 years.
Daily worship lies at the heart of cathedral life; prayer is offered throughout the day and on most days it includes at least one service sung by the Cathedral Choir. The Cathedral also hosts a range of events including concerts, workshops and conferences.
Appointed in 2023, Tom Branfoot is the Cathedral’s current Writer in Residence. The role involves delivering creative writing projects, working with local communities and charities and producing original work inspired by the Cathedral’s archives. The Cathedral also hosts an annual themed poetry competition, celebrating the creative talent of Manchester’s communities and raising the profile of the Cathedral in the city’s literary scene.
Manchester City of Literature is committed to inclusion and accessibility for everyone.
