English translation by Wendy Call:
Who Are We
Who are we all of us who seem different now Where is our home where have our songs gone the magpies’ raucous calls so far away the joyful flowers illuminating my mother’s huipils forgotten my children won’t hear the stories born in my father’s mouth my childhood days stay silent before the shame of being different we hear only the city’s rumble the rusted days We have forgotten the name that gave us life that shadow I wanted to erase Who are we now all of us who once wanted to be like the others?
