No Tongues Left To Chant: Scots

Manchester City of Literature project

Scots is now recognised as an official language and in the 2022 census, 1,508,540 people reported that they could speak Scots. It is recognised as having vulnerable status by UNESCO.

The Scottish poet Allan Ramsay (1684-1758) wrote many songs and poems in Scots, a sample of some you can see below.
